Green-e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy

The Green-e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy defines a method for determining the carbon value (in tons of greenhouse gas) of renewable energy generation. The Protocol is intended to bring additional credibility to the market for greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions derived from renewable energy project activities, and further the development of the voluntary market for renewable energy. It summarizes the eligibility requirements for Green-e Climate Certification of GHG emission reductions from renewable energy, the methodology used to calculate GHG emission reductions, and other requirements related to tracking, prevention of double counting and double claiming, additionality, and verification.

The Protocol applies to grid-connected renewable energy projects located in the United States. To be eligible for certification, renewable energy projects must meet or exceed the criteria listed in the Protocol.

Supporting Documents

  • Green-e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy

  • Green-e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy Program Rules
For a seller wishing to use the Protocol as an Endorsed Program, first read over the Green-e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy Program Rules. This document provides an overview of the verification and other requirements, as well as the associated fees.

  • Generator Attestation and Tracking Attestation
In order to sell a Green-e Climate Certified Product using the Green- e Climate Protocol for Renewable Energy as an Endorsed Program, each generator from which GHG emission reductions are sourced must fill out a Green-e Climate Generator Attestation and a Green-e Climate Tracking Attestation. The Generator Attestation must be filled out by the generator owner while the Tracking Attestation must be filled out by the entity that signed up the generator with a REC Tracking System.
