Alliant Energy Offers Green-e Certified Renewable Energy to more than 500,000 Customers

April 22, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Center for Resource Solutions announced today that more than 500,000 Alliant Energy customers in Minnesota and Iowa can now choose renewable energy that is Green-e Certified. Alliant Energy's innovative Second Nature™ program recently gained certification by Green-e, the nation's leading certification and verification program for renewable energy. Residents, businesses and farms in Iowa and Minnesota now have assurance that the clean, renewable electricity they support meets strict standards and is independently verified.

"Second Nature™ customers are helping create a cleaner energy future in the Midwest," said Dan Lieberman, Green-e Program Manager - Utility Markets. "Green-e certification provides participating consumers with confidence that they will receive a product that meets a series of stringent environmental and customer protection criteria."

To be eligible for Green-e certification, 100% of a product's energy supply must come from renewable resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass or low- impact hydropower, and a significant portion must come from new projects located within the region. None of the electricity for the product can be purchased from fossil fuel or nuclear facilities.

Alliant Energy's Second Nature™ program allows customers to support a combination of wind power from wind farms in Minnesota and Iowa, and biomass energy from a landfill in Wisconsin. This renewable energy then displaces energy produced by more traditional sources such as coal and natural gas, resulting in cleaner air and improving the health of the community.

When just one household participates in the Second Nature™ program at the 100% level, the environmental impact is equivalent to planting 2.3 acres of trees or not driving over 18,810 miles in a car each year. The positive environmental impact increases with each customer. At year-end 2003, Second Nature grew to over 9,500 participants, and was ranked among the top ten renewable energy programs in the nation by the Dept. of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

"Second Nature offers customers a simple way to make a positive and direct impact on the on the environment and our future," says Kelly Smith, Second Nature product manager for Alliant Energy. "Last year, Second Nature participants supported almost 28 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy. That's enough electricity to fully power 2,900 homes, and an environmental impact equivalent to taking 5,000 cars off the road. We are pleased to offer a high quality program that meets Green-e standards of excellence."

The Center for Resource Solutions verifies that utilities are meeting their requirements through an annual verification process by an independent auditor. In addition, Green-e staff conduct an annual review of product marketing materials to ensure companies are adhering to Green-e's Code of Conduct. Alliant Energy customers can be sure that they are directing their dollars toward the support of clean renewable energy meeting strict standards set through a collaborative process with environmentalists, consumer advocates and energy experts.
