Green-e Certifies Pennsylvania Energy Cooperative's EcoChoice 100
January 19, 2000
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) announced today that the Green-e Program has certified its sixth Pennsylvania electricity offering. The latest certification goes to EcoChoice 100, an electricity offering from the Energy Cooperative Association of Pennsylvania (Energy Cooperative). EcoChoice 100 is produced from 100% renewable energy. When Energy Cooperative members see the Green-e certification, they can be sure they are purchasing electricity from reliable renewable resources that meet strict consumer protection and environmental standards.
"The Energy Cooperative's 100% renewable EcoChoice 100 means that Pennsylvanians now have even more Green-e certified options to choose from when buying environmentally friendlier power for a cleaner future. We welcome EcoChoice to our list of electricity options," said Jan Hamrin, Executive Director of the CRS.
"We are very pleased to be certified under the Green-e standard. Green-e certification is the best way to assure our customers that they're receiving environmentally superior products. Green-e brings credibility, and that gives our members confidence that their energy choices are creating a healthier planet," said Nadia Adawi, Director of Conservation and Renewable Energy.
To receive Green-e certification, at least half of an electricity product's energy supply must come from eligible renewable resources such as wind, solar, geothermal, biomass or small hydro projects. Any non-renewables used to supply the electricity must result in less air pollution than Pennsylvania's traditional power mix, and none of the electricity for the product can be specifically purchased from a nuclear facility.
The Energy Cooperative agrees to abide by the Green-e program's Code of Conduct governing its customer treatment. CRS will regularly review the Energy Cooperative's marketing materials, to make sure the Cooperative is not misleading members. The Energy Cooperative will also undergo an annual verification process documenting that the Cooperative has purchased enough renewable electricity to meet its EcoChoice 100 marketing claims. More information on the voluntary Green-e program is available at www.green-e.org. More information on the Energy Cooperative can be found at www.theenergyco-op.com or (215) 972-1537.
Pennsylvania's electricity market has been deregulated since 1998, giving consumers the option to choose their power provider. CRS launched Green-e in California, in 1997 and in Pennsylvania in 1998. Currently, Green-e certified electricity is offered to over 260,000 customers nationwide. Green-e certification is also available in New Jersey and New England.
