Green-e Program Lauds EPA Green Power Purchase
June 4, 1999

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Center for Resource Solutions today applauded the US Environmental Protection Agency for purchasing 100% renewable energy for its Richmond, CA-based research facility. This purchase marks US EPA as the first federal agency to purchase 100 percent renewable green power for one of its facilities.

"This decision by EPA puts it in the vanguard of federal agencies seeking to demonstrate the environmental promise of electric utility restructuring," said Jan Hamrin, CRS Executive Director. Hamrin continued, "this green power purchase also provides an important demonstration that the Clinton Administration is serious about taking real steps to cut greenhouse gas emissions, clean up our air, and protect our environment and illustrates how the recent Executive Order on green power can be translated into real action."

The power purchased by EPA, provided by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, is Green-e certified. Green-e certification means that the Green-e program will annually verify that SMUD has purchased enough green power to meet EPA's green power needs. Green-e criteria also mean that an increasing portion of the green electricity SMUD provides US EPA in the future will be derived from newly-constructed renewable energy facilities.
