Green-e Greets Santa Monica Switch to Green Power
June 4, 1999
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - This week Santa Monica, CA became the first city in the United States to purchase Green-e certified electricity to meet all of its electricity needs. Santa Monica's historic decision marks it as a leader among the California businesses, churches, and state and federal government agencies using green power purchases to reduce air pollution, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and make California the nation's leader on green power issues.
"California has been on the cutting edge in science, technology, and business," said Jan Hamrin, Executive Director at the Center for Resource Solutions. "Green power purchases such as Santa Monica's are ensuring that the state will also lead the nation in greater use of cleaner, greener sources of electricity," Hamrin stated.
Santa Monica's electricity is supplied by Commonwealth Energy and is certified through the Green-e Renewable Electricity Program. Green-e certification ensures that Green-e will annually document for Santa Monica that Commonwealth has purchased enough green power to meet Santa Monica's electricity needs. Green-e criteria also require Commonwealth to supply an increasing portion of Santa Monica's future green power requirements from newly constructed renewable energy facilities.
