Green-e Program Wins Energy-Oscar 2000
May 18, 2000
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) announced today that their Green-e Program was awarded an Energy-Oscar by the Energy Globe 2000 Program. Green-e is a renewable energy certification program, based on environmental and consumer protection standards administered by the non-profit CRS. Green-e promotes cleaner energy choices in deregulated U.S. markets and ensures that electricity customers are getting what they pay for. Currently, Green-e certifies and verifies 26 renewable electricity products in three states.
The Energy Globe 2000 "Energie Gala" award ceremony was held in Linz, Austria and recognized outstanding programs in the field of renewable energy from United Nations policy initiatives to successful, rural energy projects in Nepal. Competing with nearly 1,000 other projects, Green-e was recognized for its achievements in promoting sustainable energy use. Following the award ceremony, Energy Globe 2000 hosted World Sustainable Energy Day and the Sustainable Energy Fair, one of the largest energy trade fairs in the world. The fair showcased 1,600 exhibits from around the globe, with over 180,000 people in attendance.
"The goal of World Sustainable Energy Day is to provide new impulses to the participating experts and decision-makers as they meet the challenge of transforming the world's energy systems towards sustainability," said Christian Egger, Head of the International Co-operation and Training Unit of Energy Globe 2000.
"CRS is very pleased Green-e has received international recognition. We are honored to share the Energy-Oscar stage with other successful sustainable energy programs from around the world," said Jan Hamrin, Executive Director of CRS.
California's electricity market has been deregulated since 1997, giving consumers the option to choose their power provider. CRS launched Green-e in California in 1997, in Pennsylvania in 1998, and in New Jersey and throughout New England in 1999. Currently, over 200,000 customers nationwide purchase Green-e certified electricity. More information on the Green-e program is available at www.green-e.org or toll free at 1-888-63-GREEN.
