Toyota Motor Sales USA is the First Company to Earn
Use of Green-e Logo

May 8, 1998

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Center for Resource Solutions today announced that with its purchases of Green-e certified electricity, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA Inc., has been approved to use the Green-e certification seal in its marketing, advertising, and corporate communications. The first California company to buy 100% renewable electricity certified under the Green-e Program, Toyota is developing communications strategies to inform their customers that they are purchasing environmentally-friendly electricity.

"We want our customers to know that Toyota cares about air pollution and the environment. By choosing to buy clean, green electricity, we are setting a standard that other companies can follow," said Yoshi Ishizaka, TMS President and CEO.

Companies will increasingly report their green electricity purchases by using the Green-e logo, in the same way that many companies now use the recycled symbol to tell their customers that they have purchased environmentally-friendly paper.

"Toyota's decision to purchase Edison Source's Earth Source 100 (SM), a Green-e certified renewable electricity product, represents a real commitment to protecting our air quality, our health and the environment. When people see Toyota using the Green-e logo, they will know the company is taking its corporate, social and environmental responsibility seriously," noted Jan Hamrin, Executive Director of CRS, the organization that oversees the Green-e Certification Program.

The Green-e Program helps customers easily identify certified electricity products based on at least 50% clean, renewable energy which is generated from wind, solar, hydropower, biomass and geothermal sources. Edison Source was the first company to bring a 100% renewable Green- e certified product to the new California energy marketplace.

Electricity products that meet or exceed Green-e's stringent environmental and consumer protection standards are eligible to use the Green-e logo. Power providers offering Green-e certified products also sign a code of conduct and undergo an annual audit to verify that they are buying renewable-based electricity on behalf of their customers. In turn, companies that purchase Green-e certified electricity products are eligible to use the Green-e logo to inform the public about their commitment to buying renewable-based electricity.
