Green-e Certifies Community Energy's
New Wind Energy
--Certified Mid Atlantic Wind Energy Available to All--
May 9, 2002
San Francisco, CA (May 9, 2002)-- The Center for Resource Solutions
(CRS) announced today that Community Energy's New Wind Energy
products have received Green-e Certification. Residential, government,
and Business customers who buy New Wind Energy will have an
independent assurance that their purchase supports generation from
newly built wind facilities in Pennsylvania and other parts of the
Mid Atlantic.
"We are pleased to receive Green-e certification," says
Brent Aldefer, CEO of Community Energy. "Community Energy is
committed to providing out customers high quality renewable power
and assurances that their purchase contributes to a more sustainable
energy future."
New Wind Energy is supplied from the Exelon-Community Energy
Wind Farms at Mill Run and Somerset in western Pennsylvania. These
facilities utilize 16 1.5-megawatt turbines, some of the largest
commercial wind turbines ever used in the U.S. Community Energy
is also working to bring the largest wind farm east of the Mississippi
online in 2002. Community Energy customers include the five largest
purchasers of wind-generated energy in the nation, such as the University
of Pennsylvania and The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Each purchased
the equivalent of 5% of their total electricity usage.
Consumers purchase New Wind Energy in addition to their existing
electric supply. Green-e certifies that an amount of renewable energy
equivalent to their purchase is delivered to the 'grid' or power
pool that provides electricity to the Mid Atlantic. "Through
the purchase of New Wind Energy, consumers help reduce our nation's
dependence on fossil fuels to produce electricity, and contribute
to the reduction of harmful air pollutants," said Jan Hamrin,
Executive Director of CRS. "Green-e certification means Mid
Atlantic consumers can be confident they are receiving the environmental
benefits of green power as well as helping to expand the market
for clean renewable energy." Information on Community Energy's
certified products can be found at: www.NewWindEnergy.com.
Since 1997, Green-e has served as a nationally recognized tool
to help consumers identify environmentally superior renewable energy
offerings. Green-e is a voluntary certification program for renewable
energy products sold in competitive retail electricity markets,
regulated markets, and nationwide through Tradable Renewable Certificates
(TRCs). The Community Energy's products are certified under Green-e
standards for TRCs. To earn Green-e certification, a TRC product
must originate from 100% new renewable facilities that generate
energy from the sun, the wind, the heat of the Earth, low-impact
hydropower, biogas, or biofuels. Certified providers undergo an
annual verification process audit to document that the company purchased
enough quantity and type of renewable certificate to meet customer
demand and marketing claims. Community Energy also agrees to abide
by the Green-e Code of Conduct, and to submit marketing materials
to CRS to meet Green-e disclosure and truth-in-advertising requirements.
