Website Launched to Provide Californians Information on Quality Green Electricity Products
March 1, 1998

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Green-e Renewable Electricity Branding Program, the country's first voluntary certification and verification program for environmentally friendly electricity products, today launched a website to help Californians learn more about green electricity products -- www.green-e.org.

Beginning March 31, 1998, the California electricity market will open to competition, allowing businesses and households to choose their electricity supplier. The Green-e Branding Program was founded by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions to help customers identify credible green power offerings in the open market. To gain Green-e certification, electricity products meet a stringent environmental and customer protection standards and undergo an annual audit.

The Green-e website provides Californians a home base to learn more about Green-e certified products and options for "going green" with their electricity purchases. The site includes an overview of products that qualify to use the Green-e brand, links to the marketers offering those products, and extensive details on the Green-e program and organization. The site's "Kids Corner" has tools student in grades 1-6 can use to learn more about renewable energy. Reporters can visit the site's "Press Galley" to get background information on green power and download the Green-e Logo. The site also contains links to other organizations with an interest in electricity and the environment.

"By using the Green-e website, Californians can use the internet to identify green electricity products from their own home," said John White of the Center For Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies and a Green-e Board Member. "Californians can use this information to join the growing movement of people committed to voting for the environment through their electricity purchases."
