Introducing the New Green-e® Energy Federal Option

Ensuring Federal Government Agencies Have Access to Green‑e® Certified Renewable Energy

Signed in 2021, Executive Order 14057: Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability established a policy that the federal government will lead America by example to help transition the nation to a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. It will do this in part by setting ambitious government-wide goals for a 65 percent reduction in Scopes 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 from 2008 levels and achieving net-zero emissions procurement. Under this Executive Order, federal agencies must consume renewable energy provided to them by their retail service provider, or through power purchase agreements, purchased unbundled RECs, on-site renewables, or their default electricity service.

But in order to qualify, agencies must receive supply from facilities that meet specific quality criteria, including that any such facility was placed in service on or after October 1, 2021, and that the energy is consumed in the same grid region as it is generated. We are now offering a Green-e® Energy Federal Option certified product to ensure that your Federal Agency customers are meeting their obligations under the order.

Make It Easy to Comply through Green-e® Energy Certification

The Green-e® Energy certification program’s Federal Option is a solution that can currently certify generation used to meet the obligations of EO 14057. In most cases, Green-e® Energy certification requirements are more stringent than the Executive Order requires. At the same time, the Green-e® Energy Annual Verification Audit Protocol for Federal Option Products contains relevant procedures to ensure that EO 14057 requirements are being met in cases where they are stricter than Green-e® Energy requirements. This helps reduce risk not only to buyers purchasing to comply with EO 14057 but also mitigates contract disputes for sellers.

Add a Federal Option Program

For current Green-e® Energy participants, a new Federal Option program can be added with no annual base fee, as long as any non-Federal Option Green-e® program is operational. The only cost associated with the certified generation is a small volumetric fee for the megawatt hours that are certified.
