Direct Procurement

Direct Procurement

Companies procuring directly from a project or on-site facility can have their clean energy and carbon offsets certified through the Green-e® program

The Green-e® certification’s direct procurement option offers third-party oversight over transactions of renewable electricity, biomethane (also known as renewable natural gas), and carbon offsets, from project to retirement. The direct procurement option is specifically designed for these transaction types, offering a streamlined audit that ensures the underlying environmental commodities (RECs, carbon offsets, or RFCs) are not double-claimed, that the projects meet the environmental quality criteria outlined in the Green-e® standards, and that procurement exceeds regulatory requirements and is not double-counted.

Buyers rely on the Green-e® program for their renewable energy certificate (REC), utility green pricing, competitive electricity, RNG, and carbon offset purchasing. Now they can get the same guarantees for direct procurement.

Program Benefits

  • Prevent double counting and double claiming
  • Ensure procurement is voluntary and exceeds regulatory requirements
  • Support accurate and defensible environmental claims
  • Enhance credibility with external stakeholders and NGOs
  • Ease reporting or meet requirements across frameworks (WRI, CDP, LEED, etc.)

“Large purchasers are increasingly looking to drive greater impact with their renewable energy purchases and investments. As they pursue contracts directly with renewable energy facilities or develop onsite themselves, Green-e® certification program’s direct procurement option provides a way to validate the impact of that procurement in the broader marketplace.”

Bryn Baker, Manager of Renewable Energy, World Wildlife Fund

“Purchasers of all sizes are looking to make a greater connection to the source of their renewable energy and are finding direct procurement a powerful tool to lower their costs and economic risks while meeting their GHG commitments.”

Kevin Rackstraw, Vice President of Customer Solutions, CustomerFirst Renewables
