Green-e® Energy

Green-e® Energy

Green‑e® Energy certification is the leading third-party certification in renewable electricity markets.

For nearly three decades, Green‑e® Energy certification has provided oversight for voluntary renewable electricity transactions, giving assurance to consumers and businesses that they are reducing the environmental impact of their electricity use.

Green‑e® Energy Criteria for Certified Products

The Green‑e® Renewable Energy Standard for Canada and the United States identifies criteria renewable electricity must meet to be used in a certified renewable energy product. Most notably, electricity must come from approved sources of supply—certain wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, or low‑impact hydropower. In addition, only new renewable facilities built in the last 15 years can be used. And electricity can’t be used to fulfill a state renewable electricity goal, and can’t be “double counted” towards that goal.

The Green-e® Energy program currently offers certification for renewable electricity and REC transactions in Canada, Chile, Taiwan R.O.C, Singapore and the United States, under Standards developed for each of those markets. CRS has also published an International Standard, under which it is developing certification options for new markets.

Benefits of Certified Renewable Energy

Green‑e® Energy certification is the most rigorous and respected consumer protection program for renewable electricity, with a transparent, published standard and hundreds of stakeholders participating in setting and regularly revising that standard. It offers:

Consumer Credibility. The Green-e® brand is the leading third-party certification and verification program in renewable electricity markets. It is recognized as the gold standard for renewable electricity sourcing.

Risk Reduction. Protects against double counting and claiming, creating confidence in clean electricity related purchases.

Quality Assurance. Certified renewable electricity products meet rigorous environmental, sustainability, and marketing claims standards.

Stakeholder-Driven Standards. Overseen by an independent Governance Board, including important environmental stakeholder representatives such as the Union of Concerned Scientists, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
