Green-e® Renewable Fuels Standard Expanded to Include New Requirements for Biomethane from Animal Waste
Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) is pleased to announce an important update to the Green-e® Renewable Fuels Standard. After more than five years of stakeholder engagement and extensive scientific review with input from environmental nonprofits and industry experts, CRS, with approval from the Green-e® Governance Board, has finalized a set of strict requirements that allows for exemplary concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) as a permissible type of biomethane production facility under the Green-e® Renewable Fuels Standard.
These requirements, now included as Appendix A of the Standard, ensure that any biomethane produced from CAFOs meets rigorous environmental and sustainability criteria. This set of unprecedented rules is intended to safeguard local communities and surrounding wildlife, while allowing for biomethane production through the responsible use of animal waste from existing qualifying CAFOs. CRS actively sought community input during the development of these requirements and moving forward there will be opportunities for feedback and engagement from community members living near any CAFO facility that applies to be an approved biomethane production facility under the standard. By setting strong safeguards, CRS is advancing the integrity of renewable fuel markets and ensuring that participants can confidently support projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while addressing broader environmental concerns.
CRS recognizes the depth of collaboration that went into developing this addition, and thanks all stakeholders who contributed their expertise and perspectives throughout the process. This milestone reflects CRS’s ongoing commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in voluntary renewable fuel certification.
